Meridian Technology Center is the first area vocational-technical
school in Oklahoma to offer this specialized field of study
in the medical area. Certified Massage Therapy spans a wide
variety of therapeutic approaches, working to improve an individual's
health and well-being through the physical manipulation of
soft tissue, connective tissue, and ligaments and the balancing
of body energetics.
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
A solid foundation in anatomy and physiology forms the basis
for training in specific massage techniques. Students will
learn standard terminology, names and locations of bones and
major muscles and how these muscles produce movement. Students
will also be given an overview of the function of the human
body and will learn about each system.
MASSAGE THEORY AND TECHNIQUE
This portion of the program will provide a comprehensive survey
of the history of massage therapy, and extensive practice
of clinical techniques and practices. Emphasis is on indications
and contra-indications of massage and the practical techniques
of massage applications. Hands-on techniques will include
Swedish Massage, Basic Shiatsu, Reflexology, Eastern Modalities,
Trigger Points/Deep Tissue, Sports Therapy, and Supervised
Clinical Practice.
CLASSROOM STUDY
Courses in basic business practices and professionalism will
be emphasized to better prepare students in ethics, CPR, first
aid, blood borne pathogens, and appropriate safety measures
will be taught. The status of proposed laws governing the
practice of massage in the State of Oklahoma will be reviewed.
PRACTICUM
This portion of the course will provide students the necessary
experience to fine-tune their skills. Students will have the
opportunity to shadow massage therapists currently practicing
in the field which will help in their career path decisions.
Students will also be able to provide on-site seated and table
massages working closely with various businesses in the community.
This will help to boost confidence and improve client interaction.
