The masonry program is designed to meet the needs of all
training in masonry construction. You will receive "hands-on"
experience in brick, stone, block, ceramic tile, and concrete
construction. All instruction is reinforced through actual
on-site projects.
EQUIPMENT USED
You will have the opportunity to use and master the following
equipment: Masonry saws, mixers, rulers, levels, trowels,
hammers, chisels, and scaffolding.
STRONG POINTS
- Along with the class, you will work on live construction
projects off campus using brick, block, stone, tile and
concrete.
- As a member of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America
(VICA), you will have the opportunity to develop important
interpersonal skills. Through participation in many leadership
and training activities, the opportunity to compete in local,
state, national, and international contests, you will leave
Meridian Technology Center ready to be a leader in the workforce.
- The class is also supplemented with special activities
such as field trips, on-the-job training opportunities,
expert guest speakers, and live construction jobs.
- The masonry program is recognized by the Accredited General
Contractors (AGC) as a vocational program.
SKILLS NEEDED FOR SUCCESS
Basic math, reading, problem solving, and leadership skills,
along with good eye-hand coordination, are essential for success
in this program. Being a productive and cooperative, paying
attention to detail, and working as team members are equally
important.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The following are some of the positions of which you will
be qualified upon completion of the program: brick masonry
trainee, union apprenticeship, tiles setting construction,
and concrete placement construction, and residential and commercial
construction.
The masonry and construction fields offer the highest paying
jobs for short-term training without college. Masons have
the option of joining the construction workforce, one of America's
largest employers, or becoming self-employed. Work hours are
normally 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
