Machinists are skilled workers who are able to make all types
of machines metal and plastic parts with machine tools. They
must be able to set up and operate all of the basic machine
tools. They must know how to read blueprints and how to use
all of the common metal working hand tools and precision measuring
instruments.
The machinist must know of the properties and characteristics
of the different metals to be machined. The heat-treatment
properties of many metals must also be known, since these
will be used in making metal parts and cutting tools that
must be head-treated after machining.
Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machinists
use both manual and computer-aided machines. You will learn
how to set up and operate all of the basic CNC machine tools
and the usage of all the common precision measuring tools.
You will also learn the properties of different metals to
be machined as well as how to read engineering drawings.
EQUIPMENT USED
You will learn the use of hand tools, grinders, drill presses,
and lathes, milling machines, micrometers, rules and calipers,
and precision equipment. You will learn the use of CNC Lathes
and CNC Milling Machines.
STRONG POINT
The program uses industrial quality equipment and a "hands-on"
approach for training. Work site learning opportunities may
be available for advanced students.
SKILLS NEEDED FOR SUCCESS
The desired basics are reading and math skills (including
fractions, geometry, and formulas), communication skills,
problem solving skills, and effective use of logic and reasoning
skills. Physically, you must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch
and crawl; use fingers and hands to manipulate objects, possess
good eye and eye coordination; see well (either naturally
or with correction), and lift, carry and transport objects
weighing up to 50 pounds.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Methods of entering this occupation include direct application
to employers or local machinists' units. Apprenticeships may
be available to further formal training. Completers of this
program will be prepared to seek employment in manufacturing
and machining related fields. The positions available offer
a wide variety of working hours and salaries. The hours range
from shift work to part-time hours.
