This course provides you the opportunity to develop the basic
manipulative skills involved in auto body repair and refinishing.
You will develop an understanding of the underlying theories,
technical information, and related occupational information
to assure sound judgment and proper procedures involved in
the repairing and servicing of the automotive body and chassis.
EQUIPMENT USED
You will receive training to use the following equipment:
mig welder, refinishing equipment (paint mixing system, paint
gun, paint booth, etc.), frame straightening equipment, and
various body tools (hammers, dollies, grinders, etc.). You
will also receive extensive training in the use of hand tools.
STRONG POINTS
- This program offers you the opportunity to begin working
"hands on" during the second semester of your
first year. During that first year, you will do various
jobs ranging from detailing to helping with a complete paint
job.
- Collision Repair has an up-to-date paint booth that can
bake paint at temperatures up to 140°F.
- You will learn how to use chief frame straightening equipment
and the operation of HVLP refinishing equipment.
SKILLS NEEDED FOR SUCCESS
Strong basic reading and math skills (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division of fractions and percentages)
are essential for this program. Good eye-hand coordination
and motor skills will help you to progress quickly within
the program.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Training in this program will enable you to gain employment
in various positions such as: body shop and paint shop helper,
automotive refinisher, auto body technician, fiberglass technician,
salesperson of paint and body supplies, insurance appraiser,
or auto body shop manager. Upon completion of the two year
program you can expect an approximate 40-hour work week and
salary will vary depending on specific job, shop size, and
size of town in which the shop is located.
