This program offers you learning opportunities in several
phases of residential/light commercial air conditioning and
domestic and commercial refrigeration. Basic instruction includes
the study of mechanical refrigeration cycles, refrigeration
components and their functions, electrical theory, circuit
wiring, and the tools of the trade.
EQUIPMENT USED
The following are types of equipment and tools you will learn
to use during your training:
- Analog and Digital Ohmmeters
- Ammeters and Voltmeters
- Hermetic and Capacitor Analyzers
- Vacuum Pumps
- Refrigerant Recovery Units
- Electronic Leak Detector
- Manifold Gauge Set
- Various Portable Power and Hand Tools
STRONG POINTS
- This program offers an individualized, self-paced learning
environment.
- Special computer programs teach refrigeration basics,
heat load calculations, duct design and system troubleshooting.
- An apprentice license and refrigerant handling certification
are obtainable through this program.
- Install complete A/C system in Building Trades house.
SUGGESTED COURSES
Basic reading and math skills, (including fractions and formulas)
and communication skills are all important courses needed
to be successful in this program.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The training you will receive in the Air Conditioning and
Refrigeration program will enable you to gain employment in
many areas. These include: air conditioning and refrigeration
parts and equipment sales, residential and light commercial
heating and air conditioning system installation and/or service,
domestic or commercial refrigeration service, or sheet metal
duct fabrication. Some companies may offer longer hours during
the busy season, April through August, and shorter hours during
the "off-season," while other companies offer regular
hours year round. Benefits will vary with the size of the
company.
