Residential and Commercial Construction covers the special
skills and practices of the building trades industry. This
course consists of classroom instruction to provide you with
the theory of construction enhanced by "live-work"
projects for "hands-on" applications. Training includes
use of equipment, concrete forming, blueprint reading, site
and foundation layout, framing roofing, interior and exterior
finish. Training also includes materials selection, various
construction procedures, and consumer needs.
EQUIPMENT USED
The equipment you will have the opportunity to work with is
modern and up-to-date and used in the trade today. Some of
these are many different types of saws, jointers, planers,
shapers, air nailers, power hand tools, etc.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
You will have the opportunity to develop skills for both residential
and commercial carpentry and work in areas such as: form setting,
framing, exterior siding and trim, roofing, drywall installation,
and interior trim. Post-secondary education opportunities
are available at OSU Okmulgee and Oklahoma State University
in Stillwater, in their Construction Management programs.
STRONG POINTS
- The Residential and Commercial Construction program is
recognized by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) as
a vocational training program.
- You will also have the opportunity to gain experience
by working on the construction of a home; a modern-style
house is built every other year to enhance student learning.
- As a member of SkillsUSA, you will have the opportunity to develop important
interpersonal and leadership skills.
SKILLS NEEDED FOR SUCCESS
Strong basic reading, science, communication, and math skills
(including fractions and percents) are essential for this
program. Good eye-hand coordination and motor skills are also
beneficial. Recommended attributes for the trade are a desire
to work outside, good work habits, and a pride in your performance.
HOURS/BENEFITS
Work hours are generally a 40-hour workweek, though overtime
or split shifts may be necessary for some companies. Salary
ranges are $1,200 - $2,300 per month. Fringe benefits may
include medical and life insurance, retirement plan, paid
vacations and holiday, and sick leave.
