EMT-Paramedic
EMT-Paramedic The Paramedic is the highest level pre-hospital care provider available nationwide.
General Information

Meridian Technology Center's Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic training prepares individuals for the National Registry and State of Oklahoma practical and written licensing exams.

Today's EMT-Paramedic is a highly-trained health care professional whose primary task is to provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care. Taking the foundation of the EMT-Basic license and expanding their knowledge and skill level, the Paramedic is the highest level pre-hospital care provider available nationwide.

Program Description

The instruction process is accomplished through didactic lecture, laboratory skills, clinical skills, and field experience. Students will experience clinical rotations through hospitals and paramedic-level ambulance services.

This training requires successful completion of clinical rotations in several areas including a critical care unit, emergency department, labor and delivery, psychiatric, emergency medical services, and dialysis. It also includes a physician internship in an emergency department and an emergency medical services internship with an advanced life support ambulance unit.

Time Commitment

Training Hours - 1,184
Adults Only - Morning/Afternoon Session
Meets every Monday, Thursday and an occasional Tuesday from 8 am - 4 pm.

Pace of Curriculum
A required amount of content must be covered during the program; therefore, it is important for the student to allot time outside of the classroom for study and test preparations.

This point is stressed throughout the course, because not only must the student have an understanding of this, he/she must also solicit the understanding and support of family and friends.

  • Paramedic Airway Management and Ventilation - 24 Hours
  • Paramedic Patient Assessment - 57 Hours
  • Paramedic Trauma Emergencies - 82 Hours
  • Paramedic Medical Emergencies - 218 Hours
  • Special Patient Populations for the Paramedic - 89 Hours
  • Paramedic Assessment Based Management - 16 Hours
  • EMS Operations for the Paramedic - 62 Hours
  • Advanced EMT Clinical Preceptorship - 112 Hours
  • Paramedic Preceptorship and Leadership - 280 Hours

Attendance
  • Attendance requirements are equivalent to those expected of employees in business and industry.  Excessive absences will negatively affect progress in the program.
  • All conferences concerning attendance issues will be documented and kept in the student’s file.
  • Appointments for personal reasons should not interfere with program commitments.

Retention:  There may be various reasons why students are unable to complete the program.  The most common are:

  • Personal reasons due to lack of family or financial support.
  • Fast pace and level of stress.
  • Attendance problems due to illness of student or small children.
  • Inability to maintain 77% grade requirement in each course.
All applicants should review their personal situations in relations to these items to have them taken care of prior to enrollment.

Tuition and Expenses
Tuition: $3,000 (includes $100 lab fee)

Books: Approximately $350

Supplies: Approximately $500

Requirements

1. Health 

  • Students must prove evidence of good health by submitting the Meridian Technology Center Physical Examination Form which has been completed and signed by a physician
  • Students must submit evidence of current immunizations. It is recommended that students obtain the Hepatitis B vaccinations as health care workers are at a high risk for contracting the disease. A waiver (release of responsibility) MUST be signed for students not taking the Hepatitis B vaccine.
  • Students must not have any physical restriction that would prohibit them from performing the duties of a health care worker providing patient care:
    • Must be able to bend, walk, reach overhead, stand, lift, carry, push and handle equipment, supplies, or patients
    • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
    • Must have adequate vision to read and write
    • Must have adequate hearing and be able to converse with others in person or over the phone
    • Must possess fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination
    • Must be able to communicate with the patient through verbal responses
    • Must be aware of patient needs and changes in conditions that can be seen and/or heard

Prerequisites

Must hold current Oklahoma and National Registry licensure as an EMT-Basic.

CPR Certification

All students are required to show evidence of current CPR training by presenting documentation. This certification must be American Heart Association – Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross – CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Meridian Technology Center offers CPR courses periodically throughout the year.

Financial Aid / Scholarships

Adult students may be eligible for financial assistance through grants and scholarships. Financial aid may not cover all training expenses and cannot be used for the $500 deposit.
